Calling all Panthers and friends in multi-story buildings in Berkeley! It's Fire Season. Can you and your neighbors exit your building safely when the elevator isn't working?

A recent fire alarm at Amistad House brought to our attention that elevators automatically shut down when the fire alarm goes off. That means people using wheelchairs or walkers cannot get down from upper floors quickly or at all.
Our featured Speaker David Peattie is President of the Berkeley Disaster Preparedness Network. He will speak about their knowledge and concerns and their new Fire Buddies project that for organizing neighborhood support.
Michai Freeman from the Disabilities Commission will also share concerns and opportunities from her perspective.
As Fire Season begins, what are the Protocols for Disaster Response for older seniors and people with disabilities to get out of multi-story buildings when the elevators go out? Earthquakes, Floods, and Fires can all trigger an alarm. The false alarm at Amistad House is a wake up call. In addition, elevators break down often enough to warrant a backup system.
Help us organize visits to City Councilmembers, and speak up at Civic Commissions that are still meeting.
We need your help to document the issues and find solutions that actively engage residents, neighbors, the Fire Department. Let's plan, practice, and participate together.
